A man and a woman in their 80s have been seriously injured in a single-car collision on Dublin's M50.

It happened at about 20-past-3 this afternoon on the southbound side of the road, near the Ballymount ramp.

Both the man and the woman have been taken to hospital for treatment.

The southbound side of the M50 remains closed and "severe" delays are expected in Tallaght and other nearby areas.

Diversions are in place and Transport Infrastructure Ireland is urging motorists to use a different route.
