The countdown is well and truly underway to this year’s The Echo Women’s Mini Marathon and we are thrilled to announce that Cork’s very own Brenda Dennehy is coming on board as brand ambassador for the event.

Brenda is no stranger to running, and as a seasoned athlete has taken part in a host of events including marathons in London and New York.

In the run up to the mini-marathon, Brenda will be sharing her reflections, tips, advice and tricks each week with WoW! readers.

The Cork woman says she still remembers training for her very first 5k.

“It took me six weeks, I never believed I could run, but crossing that finish line was one of the most rewarding moments of my life,” she said.

Brenda is encouraging women across Cork to don their runners and take part in this year’s mini marathon on September 21.

The annual event is hosted by Cork Athletics.

This year, the 6k course (3.73 miles) begins at 1pm on Centre Park Road and will conclude near Kennedy Park.

This year’s route will also take in the new Marina Promenade.

After passing under the finishing gantry, participants will be directed into Kennedy Park for the celebrations.

Each year, thousands of people from across Cork take part in the race and in doing so, raise in the region of €1.5 million for charities.

Last year, organisers created a special charity meeting point where participants from various groups could meet on the morning of the race before it began, and where charities could showcase their activities.

They plan to host a charity meeting point again this year- details of this will be revealed shortly.

“Every year, thousands of people from across the length and breadth of Cork take part in the mini marathon and help raise vital funds for causes close to their hearts,” said Mary Corcoran, the editor of WoW! and deputy lifestyle editor of The Echo.

“We look forward to joining people from across the city and county in taking part in this wonderful event on September 21.”
