The ICTU group of unions representing health workers are seeking an immediate extension to a scheme for workers with long Covid.

The Special Leave with Pay Scheme for healthcare workers with long Covid is due to end at the end of this month.

The unions presented their claim at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) on Thursday.

They said they made the request in order to provide assurance to health workers currently on the temporary scheme, and to allow negotiations in relation to the broader related issues on long Covid to be progressed at the Workplace Relations Commission.

The Department of Health has confirmed it is engaging with the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform on an extension to the temporary scheme.

The group of unions said in a statement that they regard the issue as "extremely urgent".

Health workers currently availing of the temporary scheme due to ongoing health difficulties because of Covid infection should not be left in a position of uncertainty, they said.

The group is also seeking a broader claim for the introduction of an Injury at Work Scheme.
