Speaking to The Echo, Breda O’Donoghue, who attended the launch in Dublin, described the launch as “a momentous day for Travellers”.

Figures show there is a gap of some 13 years in life expectancy between Travellers and the general population.

Galway City Councillor Michael Crowe said the city council should not go ahead with plans to accommodate members of the Traveller community.

Director for Advocacy at the Cork Traveller Visibility Group, Breda O’Donoghue said that suicide in the Traveller community does not discriminate on grounds of age or gender and has taken root with tragic consequences in Cork City.

“It’s a fantastic achievement and I think it will give a strong message to the Traveller community and to Ireland as well.”

The family attended the hotel with a Dept of Social Protection Community Welfare Officer (CWO) and the CWO had a cheque for the three nights accommodation.

The recipients of the awards, coordinated by Cork-based Traveller organisations Cork Traveller Women’s Network (CTWN) and the Traveller Visibility Group (TVG), are being announced today to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the State’s recognition of Irish Travellers as an indigenous ethnic group.

“We are calling on Mr Carr to come and talk to us when he is in Cork, to meet with Travellers and Roma people, and to realise the hurt and pain he has caused.”

THE way has been cleared for purpose-built Traveller accommodation on a number of sites in the city, including a controversial former illegal dump in Ballyvolane.
