Theatre Nights: Craic! at the Cork Arts Theatre while Masters of Tradition continues

Charlie Piggott and his son, fiddler and singer, Rowan Piggott, perform in the Masters Of Tradition event in Bantry tonight

Well, they have certainly won out at the Opera House because we have to announce that The Sound Of Music is fully sold out for the rest of its run. Yes, every single seat is gone.

And Joanne McNally next Friday and Saturday, August 28 and 29, is also sold out.

You have always got the ELO Tribute Show, and The Love Hungry Farmer coming up in early September! Check it all out on 021 427 0022 or www.corkoperahouse.ie.

Opening at the Everyman tonight is Tennessee Williams’ haunting play, A Streetcar Named Desire, set in the French Quarter of 1940s New Orleans. Presented by Lee Promotions, it’s directed by Aaron O’Keeffe and features Erin Stavrianos as Blanche DuBois, Cian Lehane as Stanley Kowalski, and Rosie O’Byrne as Stella. Until Saturday at 7.30 pm.

Coming up from Thursday of next week, it’s the award-winning Judy – End Of The Rainbow, portraying the real Garland and her life, while featuring many of her timeless hits. Thursday, August 27 to Saturday, September 5. See www.everymancork.com, or 021 450 1673.

There is still time to catch the hilarious Craic! The Improv Irish Play at Cork Arts Theatre, but it must end Saturday. From the team behind the Improv Panto, The Improv Murder Mystery and Getaway Outta That comes a totally irreverent rendering of our great dramatic tradition – aided of course by you, the audience, with your own suggestions! Cast: Laura Harte, Laura O Mahony, Dominic MacHale, John McCarthy, and Declan Wolfe, with musician Dylan Howe. 8pm start.

Craic! is running at Cork Arts Theatre

Next week, Sídh, performed by Úna Ní Bhriain, offers stories of mythological Irish women, blending the intimacy of the seanchaí tradition with theatrical design. Thursday-Saturday, August 28/29 at 8pm, with lunchtime shows Friday and Saturday at 1pm. 021 450 5624 or www.corkartstheatre.com.

That great Huston classic, The Misfits, will be screened at the Briery Gap in Macroom next Monday and Wednesday nights, August 24 and 26. Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, and Montgomery Clift are the outsiders seeking to somehow belong. 8pm start. 083 143 6884 or www.brierygap.ie.

Masters Of Tradition is up and running in Bantry until Sunday, with a packed, eclectic programme. Tonight’s concert in Bantry House, with accordionist Charlie Piggott and his son, fiddler and singer, Rowan Piggott, as well as The Weaving trio, is already sold out, but there might still be tickets for the late night concert at the same gracious venue with Méav Ní Mhaolchatha. Find all the wonderful events coming up over the weekend on https://www.westcorkmusic.ie/whats-on/masters-of-tradition-programme/.

Always felt you could write a song? Then make it an Irish one!

Enter the Amhrán na Laoch Songwriting Competition, which is part of Irish Music Month 2026.

Launched in 2021, the month is an initiative of Hot Press and the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland, supported by Coimisiún na Meán, and An Post, and takes place in September and October across 22 participating local radio stations around Ireland.

The winner gets airplay support across these stations, guaranteed coverage in and support from Hot Press, €2,500 prize money, music industry mentoring and support, and mixing, mastering and release of a single through the Gael Linn label. The closing date for Amhrán na Laoch is Friday, September 18.

Upload a recording or demo via the entry form on hotpress.com. Remember, it must be the original work of the songwriter, artist or band that submits the entry.

“The rules stipulate that at least 50% of the song must be in Irish,” says Hot Press editor Niall Stokes.

“We’re not against a píosa i mBéarla – but don’t forget that what judges will really want to see in your work is the Irish language.”
