Theatre Nights: A feast of dance, drama, and music

1975 / Naoi Déag Seachtó Cúig is at Cork Opera House until Saturday. Picture: Emilija Jefremova.

Tonight until Saturday at the Opera House, as part of the Midsummer Festival, Naoi Déag Seachtó Cúig is a must-see dance and theatre performance ritual where music and movement merge as one. Set to the iconic 1975 album by Irish traditional group The Bothy Band, seven exceptional dancers come together to honour, remember and be inspired by a visionary cultural happening in challenging times. 8.30pm start. And don’t forget (if you could!) that the big summer show, The Sound of Music, opens on July 23. Rehearsals are already in full swing for that, and it is likely to be a sell-out, so make sure of your tickets right now, not later. 021 427 0022 or www.corkoperahouse.ie.

Pool (No Water) is still gripping audiences in that empty space below the Metropole Hotel on MacCurtain St, where the Everyman production of Mark Ravenhill’s savage piece is also part of the Midsummer Festival. That runs to Saturday, June 27, with matinees as well as evening shows. Meanwhile, in the Everyman’s main auditorium, 0800 Cupid is on tonight and tomorrow, showcasing genre-defying queer counterculture with Cork-born cabaret star Emer Dineen. Saturday and Sunday, an opportunity to hear new writing with Everyman Up Front, in which daytime readings of never-before-heard plays are presented. It includes Comrade by Bob Kelly, Something Borrowed and Double. Get all the details on www.everymancork.com and book there too, or on 021 450 1673.

Music Network’s 2026 Spring Season comes to an exciting close with the Shuteen Erdenebaatar Quartet, a remarkable ensemble led by one of the most compelling new voices in jazz. Touring Ireland nationwide, they are at the Triskel this Saturday, June 20, and Siamsa Tire in Tralee on Sunday, both with an 8pm start. Led by Mongolian pianist and composer Shuteen Erdenebaatar, with Simon Comté (saxophone), Nils Kugelmann (bass) and Amir Bresler (drums), the quartet creates a hard-swinging yet deeply sensitive sound, rich in melodic beauty and emotional depth. Full tour details and ticket information available at www.musicnetwork.ie.

Scullion is at the Briery Gap in Macroom tomorrow night

Scullion is at the Briery Gap in Macroom tomorrow night. Probably sold out by this time, but you never know your luck. Try anyway. And that exciting new play, Derry Cotter’s The Dowry, is here on Saturday, after a sell-out at the Cork Arts Theatre. Set in a rural village in the 1950s, it brings tradition, inheritance, matchmaking and family duty on a collision course. And a fascinating film next Monday, Rose of Nevada: when a fishing boat lost for 30 years mysteriously reappears, a strange journey. 8pm start for all these Briery Gap shows. 083 143 6884 or www.brierygap.ie.

Nick Payne’s Constellations is proving such a hit at the Cork Arts Theatre that they have had to shoehorn in an extra performance tomorrow night at 5pm as well as the 8.30pm show and the Saturday matinee. Directed by Al Dalton, it is a stirring love story featuring a quantum physicist and a beekeeper who meet at a barbecue. Does a love of honey make all the difference? 021 450 5624 or www.corkartstheatre.com.

And advance notice of an exciting Irish music and dance show coming up at the Firkin Crane, Saturday of next week, June 27. Tides of Tradition debuted at Acton’s Hotel in Kinsale last summer, but the success there prompted its producers to expand into city theatres this year. Compelling storytelling, dynamic choreography and vibrant energy echo through two distinct acts: the first rooted in old Ireland and drawing on tradition, history, and emigration; the second bursting into the modern day and showcasing our new rich culture. Many of its performers and musicians have toured internationally with Irish shows, and it is something to bring your summer guests to, as well as reviving your own pride in our incredible heritage. Check out www.tidesoftradition.com or book on 021 450 7487 / www.dancecorkfirkincrane.ie.
