Wondering what's on Cork's stages over the next seven days? Jo Kerrigan tells us in her Theatre Nights column.
Theatre Nights: Host of great shows lined up at Cork Arts Theatre

Lovesong, by Abi Morgan, is on at Cork Arts Theatre from January 20-24 and January 26-31. BELOW: Tribes And Tribulations runs at Cork Arts Theatre till Saturday

So much is coming up in the weeks ahead that you’re going to have a job choosing where to go, and what to experience!

There is still just time to enjoy Aladdin at the Opera House, but that definitely ends this Sunday with the house already full tonight and for the Saturday matinee, and just a few seats left for the other performances.

Next Thursday is just the pick-me-up you needed for a gloomy January, when Norma Sheahan presents It’s Wine O’Clock, showing that 50 is really the new 30, and we should all take more chances!

Keith Barry is already sold out the next night with Unhinged, but there should still be a few tickets left for the ever-popular Reeling In The Showband Years on January 24 & 25. It’s all go! Call 021 427 0022 or see www.corkoperahouse.ie for all info and bookings.

Over at the Cork Arts Theatre, Tribes And Tribulations from LINQ Drama is a vibrant new play celebrating queer women, friendship, and the beautiful chaos of finding where you belong, told through a collection of powerful, funny, deeply human short plays.

It opened last night and runs to Saturday, but that final performance is sold out. 8pm tonight and tomorrow. 18+.

Next Tuesday-Saturday, Lovesong at Cork Arts Theatre is the touching story of a couple at different stages in their life, while from February 5-14, it hosts Hannah Moscovitch’s award-winning Infinity, directed by Julie Kelleher. A mathematician, a musician, and a theoretical physicist ponder the problem of love, each from their own standpoint. Witty, but thought-provoking too. Cork-born cast: Martha Dunlea, Timmy Creed, and Bláithín MacGabhann. 021 450 5624 or www.corkartstheatre.com.

A new season begins at Dance Cork Firkin Crane this Friday and Saturday, with Crystal Cloud by Fiona Quilligan, blending breathtaking film with live performance by a superb cast of dancers Olwen Grindley, Yves Lorrhan and Eoin Mac Donncha. 7.30pm start.

The following Friday, January 23, from 6.30pm, they are holding an informal evening to mark the start of the season and share what is coming up, followed by a performance of Cloud Study, choreographed by John Scott and featuring Salma Ataya and Mufutau Yusuf. More info on dancecorkfirkincrane.ie or 021 450 7487.

A lovely evening of exquisite music is promised at the Briery Gap in Macroom on Friday week, January 23, when Vanbrugh & Friends from the National String Quartet Foundation present pieces by Mozart, Brahms, and Mendelssohn. 083 143 6884 or www.brierygap.ie.

Irish National Opera will be in Cork on Thursday, February 5 with a performance of Janácek’s much-loved opera The Cunning Little Vixen at The Everyman.

Directed by Sophie Motley, it will feature Charlotte Corderoy in her INO debut as conductor, with U.S soprano Amber Norelai as Vixen, Jade Phoenix as the Fox, and Benjamin Russell as the Forester. Tickets on 021 450 1673 or www.everymancork.com.

Finally, a reminder The Lord Mayor’s Tea Dance is on Sunday, January 25, at City Hall from 3-5pm.

A delightful gathering of young and old from communities all over Cork and beyond who love to dance will take to the floor in the old-fashioned way, to the music of Evelyn Grant and the Cork Pops Orchestra. Strictly Come Dancing will have nothing on the attendees here!

It’s a very special occasion for young and old, and everybody has such a good time, they can’t wait for next year.
