Clubbers: Throw yourself Into The Void and enjoy

Into the Void at The Pav is the attractions this weekend in Cork.l

There’s something of the European, even global, theme to clubbing fare on offer on Friday night (May 22).

Inaugurated last November and running every two months since, Into The Void is the brainchild of an international cast of Cork-based DJs and producers, springing from the pooling of two collectives, Mindset and Inception.

Each edition to date has been ascribed a theme. The first one was titled, understandably, “The Beginning.” January’s edition, was titled “The Decent,” and March’s event was titled “The Awakening,” which they described as their reset, adding such conceptual scaffolding in their publicity as it being about a return to the body, a return to presence. No distractions, just sound, movement, and a room fully connected.

Friday’s edition at The Pav is titled “The Journey.” The journey, they say, represents growth. Inclusion and diversity. A trip through music. Sound, movement and connection.

“This edition is about discovering new sounds. It’s the moment where the noise drops away and what’s left is raw energy, groove, and a crowd that came for the love of the underground.”

Those sounds reside broadly in the sort of blend of progressive house and techno that is popular in France and Germany, a dark, hypnotic, groove-driven, peak-time and melodic electronic music. Into The Void: The Journey is designed to build from tension to release and bring you on a galactic journey with music that push forward and keep the room moving.

The choice of “The Journey” could also be a reference to the fact that this another Cork-based club night that is calling it quits for the summer and not returning until September. Joining them for this voyage are their second non-Cork-based guests, Lisa and Leo Cardi. Dublin-based and equally international, Lisa and Leo represent the capital’s Reverb collective, which they founded in June 2014, and must have surely had an influence on Into The Void.

Hailing from Italy, Lisa Ferrara’s sound blends techno, trance and progressive house influences. Inspired by artists such as Armin van Buuren, Joris Voorn, and Deadmau5, Lisa also likes to introduce more poppier moments into her sets.

From Chile, Leonardo Figueroa Cardi has gained recognition for his dark, hypnotic, and high-energy sets, blending acid, peak-time, raw techno, and Latin rhythms. It has seen him perform at some of Dublin’s most renowned venues, including Index, Block, The Grand Social and Opium Garden, and has shared stages with the likes of Alan Fitzpatrick, Sam Paganini, 999999999, and Skin on Skin.

Leo Cardi and Lisa are just one of three back-to-back sets on the night. They promise acid underground vibes and Latin rave. Into The Void mainstays AMR and Franco open the evening and Penny Drop, one of two Into The Void collective members to have played every edition closes the evening with a B2B with Cork-based Kabelo, making his Into the Void debut. Since September, Kabelo has been developing his fortnightly Friday afternoon show Gtown Sound for éist Radio, but his club DJ-ing will show a different side of his musical tastes. Something that is guaranteed throughout the evening are deep grooves, hypnotic rhythms, rolling basslines and melodic moments.

Into The Void: The Journey begins at 10pm at The Pavillion, Carey’s Lane. Tickets €12 available at the door.

Another event to look out for this weekend is at The Pav on Saturday night which sees Carmina club night capo Cee-m-Cee, aka Cillian McCarthy, and Real Fear music collective lynchpin Ultrapollen take the decks. Expect house and bass music sounds. Doors 11pm, and it’s free!
