Springfield booked their place in the third round of the Munster Junior Cup after a 2-0 victory over Cork Hospitals at St Colman’s Park over the weekend.

Both sides worked incredibly hard, but Springers had that extra bit of quality which saw them through in the end.

Following a busy start, a nice Springer’s move ended with Tiago Barillot knocking it back for Kyle Cummins to fire over from a good position.

Cummins threatened again minutes later – this time, showing neat control before turning to rifle agonisingly wide from the edge of the box, following excellent work by Aaron Cahill on the left flank.

On the break, Dara Flanagan released Jamie O’Neill and when he delivered into the box, it had too much on it for the available Brian Senyonyi.

Then, Cian O’Rourke needed to be alert to intercept a through ball from O’Neill that looked destined for Senyonyi.

Senyonyi was in the right place to receive from another Flanagan assist, but be blazed disappointingly over.

At the other end, Kyle Cummins found space on the right, but from a narrow angle, he forced Kyle Graham to push out for a corner.

Soon after, Tiago Barillot collected from Owen Kinsella’s pass before testing Kyle Graham with a fizzing low effort.

A terrific effort from a free kick by Matthew Tiffany had O’Rourke stretching every sinew before tipping over for a corner.

But, Springfield nosed in front when after terrific work by Aaron Cahill down the left flank, Tom Bardsley drilled an effort from the edge of the box which took a deflection off Dara Flanagan before nestling in the net on 28 minutes.

Springfield were having the upper hand now and when Bardsley collected from Cummins, he rifled over from a good position before Owen Kinsella struck an effort that was not too far off the target.

Then, shortly before the break, Kevin Wilmott played it short to Kyle Cummins, who fired a cross into the box where Kallum Hackett just failed to get a vital touch near goal.

With just minutes into the second period, a chance fell for Springfield, but after working to get space for himself, Kyle Cummins turned before drilling over from inside the box as Jamie O’Neill drilled narrowly wide with his free kick at the other end.

A neat flick around the corner from Kyle Cummins set Patrick Fingleton up, but he failed to finish before Bardsley fed Cummins, who steadied to slam wide.

Springfield were going through a good period now and when Kyle Cummins played a neat ball into space for Patrick Fingleton, Sean Kent’s tight defending did enough to put him off.

Springfield doubled their advantage when Patrick Fingleton collected from Wilmott before firing low into the corner on 73.

A response from Cork Hospitals saw Marc O’Connor finding a way through on the right, but a magnificent tackle from Kallum Hackett saved the day before Fingleton made Kyle Graham save at the other end with a low effort, shortly before time.
