The Munster Council's Development Boxing Squads are up and running once again.
They have been back in training every Saturday at different venues for the last 12 weeks to prepare and train for their trip to Hungary this weekend, where they will contest 12 international bouts.
The squads are made up of Munster champions form the 2025/26 season, with U15, U17 and U19 boxers gathering for the weekly training sessions.
Munster Council president Ted Barry is excited for the young boxers and he thanked all the clubs for giving their venues for training for their upcoming trip and the council are already planning for future similar trips.
“We are following on from the very successful international event we held between Ireland and the Netherlands at the Firgrove Hotel in Mitchelstown at the end of May,” Ted said.
“The majority of the boxers representing Ireland that day were all from Munster which that proves the development squads are hugely important for the province's boxers and for their long term development.
“I want to ask all the boxing clubs for their help and assistance as always and thank them for buying into the project.
“Finally, I also want to thank all the coaches that give up their spare time every Saturday for training,” Barry added.
Up to 50 boxers are training every Saturday, split between venues in Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford, where coaches from all six counties take training weekly.
The first squad that takes to the ring this weekend is a mixed team from all three age groups that will travel to Salgótarján in Hungary this weekend.
What was originally a 14 member boxer squad was unfortunately reduced to 10 through injury.
The Cork club's are well represented with Elite BC, Fr Horgan’s BC, Riverstown BC and De Courcey BC filling six spots on the team.
Other matches are in the pipeline for each month from here to December where inter-provincials are pencilled in to split visits to the East Midlands in Birmingham and The Netherlands.
The idea of the development squads is to get as many boxers from around the province of Munster to gain valuable experience against different styles of boxing, which hopefully will stand them in good stead going into Irish championships in 2027.
