Bride Rovers couldn’t take full advantage of Erin’s Own’s first defeat in Division 2 of the RedFM Hurling League but did maintain their unbeaten record to move into a share of the lead.
Following the Caherlag side’s loss away to Na Piarsaigh on Wednesday night, Rovers – promoted from Division 3 after last year – hosted Newtownshandrum. Brothers Ronan and John Geary netted for Newtown, as did Stephen Minihane, but it looked as they would end up defeated as the home side fought back.
Conor O’Riordan and Cillian Tobin had goals for the Rathcormac/Bartlemy side, the latter a penalty, while Adam Walsh was his usual unerring self from frees and they held a 2-18 to 3-14 lead in the dying moments before Turlough O’Neill secured a draw for the north Cork side.
The result leaves Bride Rovers on eight points with Erin’s Own at the top. Ballincollig and Kanturk are two points back in a share of third after they both drew their games.
Ballincollig’s Thursday night clash at home to Newcestown saw 38 points shared, with Newcestown goalkeeper Cathal Wilson landing a pair of huge frees to tie the game.
With 22 minutes left, Ballincollig looked set to move to seven points as they led by 0-15 to 0-8, with James Dwyer and David O’Sullivan impressive in defence, Harry Ahearne industrious at midfield and Stephen Wills showing up well in attack.
The hosts had led by 0-11 to 0-7 at half-time but Newcestown fought back well, aided by strong displays from centre-back Colm O’Donovan, sub Ciarán Hurley and Richard O’Sullivan in attack, while Edmund Kenneally’s dead-ball accuracy was at the usual high levels.

After they had tied the game at 0-17 each, Adam Wills and Cian O’Driscoll moved Ballincollig in front again but Wilson had the final say.
On Sunday, Kanturk’s 21 points were balanced by Ballymartle’s tally of 2-15, a result which got the south-east side their first point of the campaign.
In Division 3, Blarney and Éire Óg remain in a share of the lead after wins over Castlelyons and Courcey Rovers respectively, while Bandon and Inniscarra stay together in third after they drew with each other.
Home wins over Cloughduv and Aghabullogue in the space of four days allowed Kilworth to join Watergrasshill at the summit of Division 4. The north Cork side have a perfect record of four from four and have a game in hand on the Hill, who beat Kildorrery.
