True Love lands 1,000 guineas for Wayne Lordan at Newmarket
True Love and Wayne Lordan win 1000 Guineas for trainer Aidan O'Brien from Evolutionist and Venetian Lace.
Cork jockey Wayne Lordan took centre stage at Newmarket on Sunday as he partnered True Love to win the 1,000 Guineas for Aidan O'Brien.
The genial Ballydoyle trainer saw Gstaad finish second to Bow Echo in yesterday's 2,000 Guineas.
True Love was perceived as the yard's second choice with Ryan Moore on the well backed favourite Precise.
True Love provided Wayne Lordan with his third success in the second classic of the season Wayne Lordan had previously won the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket on Winter in 2017 and Hermosa in 2019.
Like today's winner those fillies were also the stable's second string.
True Love was a smart juvenile landing the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at this venue last season.
There was good reports about her work in the lead up to today's race although some experts harboured doubts about her stamina over today's mile.
Speaking to ITV Racing Wayne Lordan said: "She's a filly with loads of pace and she settled really well. I think when I passed the two furlong marker I was still going pretty easy, it was only a matter of time before letting her go forward and she saw out the mile well."
The Irish Guineas and the Coronation Stakes are likely to figure on her radar going forward.
The Curragh is seen as a stiffer test of stamina but bookmakers have installed True Love as the Evens favourite for the Irish 1,000 Guineas later in the month.
Evolutionist finished second for Karl Burke, with the Charlie Johnston-trained Venetian Lace third. Precise, who'd won her maiden at Cork Racecourse last year, went off the 9-5 favourite and finished seventh.
The winner is part-owned by Michael Tabor, who said:
“We thought there was a doubt about True Love getting the trip. Thankfully she's a really good filly.”
Aidan O'Brien acknowledged the invaluable contribution of the Cork jockey afterwards speaking on ITV.
"Wayne gave her a beautiful ride. She's a monster of a filly, really. It's hard to believe how big and powerful she is,she's a very classy filly."
Meanwhile at Cork Racecourse in Mallow this afternoon there was a 40/1 boilover in the €50,000 Premier Handicap the Horse and Jockey Cork Derby.
LONDONOFFICECALLIN landed the feature for the "In Bounds Syndicate" for Meath trainer Gavin Cromwell and fellow county man RobertWhearty. The featured Listed €52,500 Goffs Irish EBF Polonia Stakes was won in emphatic style by Jonny Murtagh's Royal Bay Cen with Ben Coen aboard.
A big gamble went astray on Ipanema Queen 5/4 favourite who finished only seventh having been 9/1 in the offices.
