The Midleton U16 CWSSL team who reached the National Cup final.
Two Cork schoolgirls’ teams produced thrilling performances over the weekend to secure their places in the National Cup finals.
The Lakewood U14s and Midleton U16s both overcame Knocknacarra of Galway in memorable semi-final encounters.
For Lakewood, it was a dramatic, heart-stopping finish that sealed their progression. Locked in a tightly contested battle, the Cork side showed immense resilience and determination before snatching a last-minute winner that sparked wild celebrations among players, coaches, and supporters alike. It was a moment that perfectly captured the spirit and belief within this talented young squad.
Lakewood’s journey to the final has been built on teamwork, discipline, and flashes of individual brilliance, and once again, their key players rose to the occasion. Talented Quin Twomey, the goal scorer in the semi-final was influential throughout, driving her side forward with energy and composure.
Emily O’Donovan delivered a tireless performance in midfield, linking play and keeping the pressure on the Galway defence. Aoibhinn Fitzgerald also stood out, as she produced a solid performance once again.
The game itself was a tense affair, with both teams matching each other stride for stride. Knocknacarra proved a formidable opponent, showing great organisation and attacking threat, but Lakewood refused to be rattled. As the clock ticked down and extra time loomed, it was Lakewood who found that extra spark.

The decisive goal, arriving in the dying moments, was the culmination of relentless pressure and belief, and it ensured their place in what promises to be an exciting final against Peamount.
While Lakewood’s victory was defined by late drama, Midleton U16s delivered a more controlled but equally impressive performance in their semi-final clash. Facing the same Knocknacarra club, Midleton showcased their attacking strength and composure in a 5-3 victory that underlined their credentials as serious contenders for national honours.
From early in the game, Midleton looked sharp and confident, moving the ball with purpose and creating chances. Their attacking play was clinical, and they made their opportunities count, building a lead that allowed them to manage the game effectively, even as Knocknacarra fought back with determination.
Both players demonstrated why they are so highly regarded, combining technical ability with leadership on the pitch. Rice was instrumental in driving forward play and creating scoring opportunities, while Murphy’s presence and composure helped steady the team during key phases of the match.
Despite Midleton’s control, Knocknacarra showed admirable spirit, contributing to an entertaining and open contest. Their three goals ensured the game remained competitive, but Midleton always appeared to have the answers, responding at crucial moments to maintain their advantage. The final whistle confirmed a deserved 5-3 victory and sparked celebrations for a team that has consistently impressed throughout the competition. A superb hat-trick from Ciara Finn, a goal from Eabha Kirby and an own goal sealed the victory.
A common thread between both Cork sides is the strong influence of players involved in the Gaynor Cup setup, highlighting the depth of talent being developed in the region. The experience and quality brought by these players have clearly elevated both teams, providing leadership and confidence in high-pressure situations.
It will undoubtedly be a stern test, but Lakewood’s dramatic semi-final win will give them belief that they can compete with anyone.
Midleton, meanwhile, will face Donegal outfit Gleneely Colts in their final. Having demonstrated their attacking firepower and composure, they will enter the game full of confidence, though they will be well aware that finals bring their own unique pressures and challenges.
These achievements mark a significant milestone for both clubs and underline the strength of schoolgirls’ football in Cork.
Reaching a national final is no small feat, and doing so with such style and determination speaks volumes about the dedication of players, coaches, and supporters alike.
As anticipation builds for the finals, both Lakewood and Midleton will carry not only their own ambitions but also the pride of Cork football. With talent, momentum, and belief on their side, these two superb teams have already made their mark — and they will now look to go one step further and bring national silverware back to Leeside.
