St Finbarr’s welcome Éire Óg to Togher for Round 2 of the McCarthy Insurance Group Division 1 Football League tonight with throw-in at 7.30pm.
It might be still early doors with both sides naturally down players for various reasons, but it still will be a litmus test for both.
The Barrs, reigning champions in both the Division 1 League and the Premier SFC, have set high standards in recent campaigns, while Éire Óg continue to push for consistency since suffering demotion from the top tier of the Cork football championship in 2024.
The sides are no strangers to tight league battles in recent years. The last meeting last year in Ovens saw St Finbarr’s prevail by four points.

Éire Óg, for their part, showed in that contest that they can trouble the Barrs with pace, direct running, and a willingness to press high.
St Finbarr’s enter this round after being held on home soil against newcomers Knocknagree last Sunday week. Despite having Cork senior footballer Ian Maguire in their ranks, the Barrs didn’t do enough to pick up the two points on offer.
Perhaps we shouldn’t be too surprised that St Finbarr’s weren’t at their brilliant best in that one considering they had a long season last year.
Éire Óg, meanwhile, have shown they can mix it with the best in Division 1. They have been very competitive for some time now.
Their draw against Castlehaven in the first game nearly two weeks ago in Ovens demonstrated both their attacking potential and their refusal to fold under pressure. There would have no doubt been a lot of positives out of that one for new boss Eoin Fehily.

With early season momentum on the line, this Round 2 clash carries more weight than the calendar might suggest.
For St Finbarr’s, it is an opportunity to reinforce their status as the team to beat most notably after dropping points last time out. For Éire Óg, it is a chance to make a statement that they belong in Division 1 despite being a Senior A side.
If recent history is any guide, the margins will be tight tonight in Togher.
Also tonight, Nemo Rangers’ second team host Kilmurry in the McCarthy Insurance Group Division 4 Football League at 8pm.
In Division 7, Ballygarvan, now managed by former Cork minor football boss Mick Evans, entertain Mayfield for a 8pm start.
