Christian Brothers College, Cork triumphed over Douglas Community School on penalties to claim their first Munster FAIS Senior Cup, the U19 Munster FAI Schools Soccer Cup.

Harry Walsh was the hero on the day for Christians as his save in the penalty shootout meant that the Munster FAI Schools U19 Senior Cup final would head to Sidney Hill for the first time.

Despite the difficult windy conditions, the game got off to a frantic start with both sides pushing forward in search of the opening goal.

Douglas CS had the better of the early skirmishes with a series of half chances from their forward line and Kealan Crowe was playing superbly in midfield.

In fact, Douglas CS were unlucky not to take the lead on 30th minute mark when they had a goal chalked off for offside.

The game remained scoreless at half time.

Early in the second half, Christians failed to deal with a free kick and the ball was squared across the box to Will Banks who swept the ball home; much to the delight of the Douglas CS support.

However, in the 70th minute Christians equalised as Finn Dalton’s free-kick found the top corner of the net which sent the CBC support into jubilant celebrations.

The free kick took a deflection which meant it was just out of reach for the excellent Douglas CS Keeper Ray Kiss.

The full-time whistle blew with the game tied at 1-1 and the game headed to extra-time.

Extra-time could not break the deadlock.

In the penalty shootout, Christians scored their opening four penalties through Finn Dalton, Luke O’Keeffe, Max Murphy and Conor Burke. Christian’s Keeper Harry Walsh then made a brilliant save, low to his right, to save the fourth penalty from Douglas CS.

Darragh Morley then coolly slotted his penalty home to win the Munster FAI Schools U19 Senior Cup for Christians for the first time.

Christians now progress to the Dr Tony O’Neill National Cup semi-final.
