Cork sharpshooter Chris Óg Jones has called the Rebels’ win over Meath as ‘huge’.

The Leesiders won on a scoreline of 1-23 to 1-21 in the Allianz Division 2 Football League at Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday afternoon. The victory made more impressive considering Ian Maguire was given a straight red card after 56 minutes.

It most certainly was a massive game in the promotion race given both sides had won their first three games.

“We made it tough for ourselves, very entertaining there at the end,” Jones said after a brilliant win.

“Four games, four wins, that’s all we could have asked for really. Winning is a habit. We are making a habit of it. Meath have got some great two-pointers in recent games, so we knew this wasn’t over until the hooter went.

“When Mags [Ian Maguire] went off, he was having one of his best games in the middle, and to lose him at that stage and then to win the game, it’s massive. This is huge.

“Derry now next weekend will pose a different challenge. It will probably be our toughest game.”

The Uibh Laoire forward notched up 1-4, all from play, with his goal before the interval proving absolutely huge.

Cork were seven points up at the short whistle having played with the wind.

“Someone made a comment in the dressing room at half-time that if the first half finished three or four minutes earlier, we would have came in to the dressing room not that happy with the performance,” Jones says.

“I got the goal, Steven [Sherlock] got a two-pointer and Mark [Cronin] got a point. We just went into the dressing room with such a buzz and belief, but we also knew that the game could swing.

“It was all about keeping that composure and just working hard. It was a cracking game to watch I say. Great to come out on the right side.

“The atmosphere was incredible. There was a lot more here than there would have been at a lot of the games in Páirc Uí Chaoimh anyway.”
