DHF Grangevale strikers Billy Tabb and Gabriel Cerini celebrate scoring against Cork Hospitals.
The highlight of the Cork Business League’s short season before they embark on calendar football for the first time in February was the one-in-a-million goal scored by DHF Grangevale striker Billy Tabb.
Tabb, a native of Mayfield, had returned to the club after a season with EVcore. In the three seasons before, he had enjoyed huge success with the Vale in their final campaigns of a 69-year stint in the Cork AUL, winning two knockout trophies and a Premier A title.
Tabb was signed by ambitious manager Diarmuid O’Neill and assistant Eoghan Jeffers at the start of the 2021-'22 season. Despite falling away in the league in the latter stages, the club put a rich run of form together in the Corinthians and City Challenge Cup competitions.
By this stage, Tabb had formed an effective partnership with striker Corey Harris which went on to reap rich dividends in the 3-0 win over Parkview Celtic in the final of the City Challenge at Turner’s Cross on Sunday, April 10.
After an even opening 40 minutes, Tabb began to exert his influence on the match, first setting Jacob Moleli whose control let him down before going close himself from a Dave Barrett cross early in the second 45.
After Ben Jenkins had headed the Vale in front, Tabb played the ball into the feet of Harris, who swept the ball past Alan Murphy for 2-0. In the dying minutes, he converted from the penalty spot himself after Barrett was taken down.
Two months later, Tabb was again clinical from the spot when he slotted in the opener in the Corinthians Cup Final against Coachford B at Turner’s Cross. Ollie O’Sullivan’s second-half header made the win safe.
Tabb was in scintillating form a year on, claiming the Golden Boot as the league’s top scorer, as Grangevale won a tight Premier A title by a single point over UCC. He was the club’s outstanding award winner at the end-of-season award ceremony at The Grange Bar.

His goals were instrumental in the club’s six-month stay at the top of the Premier Division in 2023-'24 before a hamstring injury in an FAI Junior Cup tie with Leeside in October kept him out of action till well into the latter half of the season.
He ended his season with EVcore in 2024-'25 with another Golden Boot accolade despite his team not featuring in the promotion hunt.
The club was delighted to re-sign him at the start of the short season after the treble success the previous season and he made an immediate impact by scoring a long-range second in the opening weekend 2-0 home win over Jay Bazz Barbers at Mayfield Park.
Of course, in the comics, Dane, one day cleaning out his grandmother’s attic, came across a pair of old-fashioned boots that belonged to 'Dead Shot' Keen – a famous centre-forward who once played for England.
Upon wearing the boots, Dane scored incredible goals against all the odds.
And so, a 'Dane special' was captured for posterity by Veo camera at MTU on Tuesday, August 5 last when Tabb scored an incredible bicycle goal in his team’s 4-2 win over Cork Hospitals in a Grandon’s Toyota Cork Business League Premier Division fixture.
With the visitors 2-1 ahead, a quick throw by goalkeeper Jamie O’Sullivan made its way out to Luke Dennehy on the halfway line. Dennehy moved the ball onto Niall Fitzgerald before he was closed down by a defender.
Fitzgerald arced a cross towards the edge of the penalty area where Tabb took the pace out of the ball with his head to enable him to execute the perfect bicycle-kick with ferocious power as he somehow was able to get the full force of his body behind the shot.

The goal was posted on the team’s Facebook page and overnight went viral. It was the first goal scored in Cork local junior soccer to be carried by Sky Sports on its latest features feed under the heading 'Take that one out!'
It went out to over 13 million viewers on the broadcaster’s Instagram page. The goal made VEO’s top 100 goals for the People's Puskás Award 2025, with viewer voting to decide the winner.
Take a bow Biily 'Dane' Tabb!
