Pobalscoil na Tríonóide were crowned Cork Colleges Senior B hurling champions after a gripping final win over Kinsale CS in Midleton last Saturday.

Played in favourable conditions on Midleton’s astro – there was early nervousness on both sides – wides exchanged before Darragh Ryan settled Pobalscoil na Tríonóide with the opening score.

Kinsale quickly found their rhythm, led by captain David Forde, who would go on to carry the bulk of their scoring threat. Points from Forde, Ryan and John Quinn helped Kinsale surge into a 0-4 to 0-1 lead.

Kinsale came close to a goal when Christian Murphy was denied by an excellent save from Pobalscoil na Tríonóide goalkeeper Ewan McCarthy. Points from Jack Dineen, Liam O’Regan and Quinn followed, before momentum eventually swung when Pobalscoil na Tríonóide struck for a crucial goal, finished by Jamie Lenane, to draw the two teams level.

Pobalscoil finished the half strongly, with three points from Ryan seeing them take a 1-6 to 0-7 advantage at the half-time break.

Kinsale came within inches of an immediate response after the restart, a long-range Forde free flicked on by Cillian Fitzpatrick before crashing back off the post. While points were traded, Pobalscoil na Tríonóide began to impose themselves through Dylan Lyons, Lenane and Cormac Delaney. Lenane then struck again, burying his second goal to stretch the lead to 2-9 to 0-8.

To their credit, Kinsale kept on plugging away. Points from Dean Cosgrave, Donnacha Ó Colmáin and five from the impressive Forde reduced the deficit to a single score entering the closing stages, but their efforts would come up short.

Carthach Ó Laoire landed a fine point for Pobalscoil to put them further ahead, while McCarthy produced two stunning late saves from Forde frees to ensure the Youghal school held on for a deserved victory.

Forde finished with 11 points and was Kinsale’s standout performer, while Owen Harte, Ollie Buckley, Lewis Kiely, Liam O’Regan and John Quinn also impressed. For Pobalscoil na Tríonóide, Finn Ó Colmáin, Darragh Ryan, Jack Dineen, Cormac Delaney, Gearóid Ó Héidhin, Ewan McCarthy, Cathal Brennan and Fionn Brennan were prominent, with Jamie Lenane earning Man of the Match honours for his two-goal contribution.
