Meanwhile, Cumann Réiteoirí Ceanntar na Cathrach CLG and Seandún have presented their Higher Education GAA Referees’ Bursary to award recipient Seán Ó hArgáin (Brian Dillons) at the Munster Technological University (MTU) Sports Scholarship awards for the 2023-2024 college year.

Mr Murphy, secretary, presented the award along with Cathal Ó Murchú, City Division Referees Secretary; Kevin O’Callaghan, MTU GAA Officer and Keith Ricken, (former Cork senior football manager) and MTU Student Services Officer.

The purpose of the bursary is to provide support to the academic and refereeing development of the student.

Mr Murphy, described it as a significant process in the development of refereeing and would like to see the scheme expanded by other GAA organisations. He also acknowledged the support offered by MTU with the bursary.

The award recipient, Mr Ó hArgáin, said: “It’s great to see referees being recognised in the same way as a player, coach or an administrator.”

He further addressed how such a scheme would “benefit young referees to continue and persist with refereeing with the award of such a bursary”.

MTU GAA Officer, Kevin O’Callaghan, acknowledged the bursary as “a very progressive move in encouraging more of our students to consider refereeing as a way to stay involved in gaelic games.
