Cork bodies to share €2.9m funding windfall for disability support projects

Almost 20 organisations from Cork will benefit from funding of €2.9m under the latest round of the Disability Participation and Awareness Fund.
The grants, announced by the Minister for Disability Norma Foley, are being provided for projects to support people with disabilities to take part in community, sports and physical activities, arts and culture, employment, and to access assistance and therapy animal programmes.
The process was operated on behalf of the department by Rethink Ireland.

The 19 successful Cork organisations will now receive grant awards of up to €200,000 each.
Among the Cork awardees are Firkin Crane, awarded €140,350 to develop an accredited elective module in inclusive dance through in-person workshops; Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland, awarded €170,685 to progress a group of dogs through training and placement preparations, and Irish Dogs for the Disabled, awarded €125,685 to expand its reach by training and placing a group of new task dogs by the end of the funding period.
Ms Foley said all projects awarded will “help ensure that people with disabilities can participate fully in all aspects of community life and realise their potential."
"I am pleased to announce funding for a diverse range of projects that will support greater participation and inclusion for people with disabilities,” said Ms Foley.
“There is funding for assistive technology initiatives, inclusive dance and singing programmes and the training of assistance dogs to support disabled people with practical, everyday tasks such as leaving the house independently and attending school, college or work.”
Each of the successful projects will receive both financial and non-financial support as part of the funding model.
