Rathcormac strengthened their grip at the helm of League 3 with a 2-0 victory over fellow title-chasers Coachford B in a competitive encounter at Conna.

Following a bustling start, Coachford’s Cian Spicer had to stretch to touch out for a corner and deny Richard Morrisson an opportunity from Wayne O’Leary’s cross.

From a corner then at the other end, Billy Barrett rose to head wide of the target and when play quickly shifted to the other end, Wayne O’Leary’s intended pass with a header for Richard Morrisson, had just too much on it, which allowed Michael Brennan advance in the nick of time to collect.

But, minutes later, Wayne O’Leary’s cushioned header fell into the path of Morrisson who crossed for the supporting O’Leary to force home the opener on 16 minutes.

An immediate response from Coachford B saw Billy Barrett collect from Matt Brady before slamming the woodwork with his effort.

And after Tadgh Bradley’s strike from distance failed to go according to plan, Morrisson was upheld inside the box which won Rathcormac a penalty on 29 minutes.

Dom Wajtos entrusted himself to take the penalty and from the spot, he made no mistake with a neat finish to the corner to double his side’s advantage.

A forceful pass then from Dom Wajtos skidded off Wayne O’Leary before arriving into the arms of Michael Brennan.

Coachford had a chance after that when from Pat Walsh’s corner, Billy Barrett’s miss-kick skewed into the path of Josh Martin who fired wide from inside the box.

Following a successful transition, Rathcormac’s Wayne O’Leary headed on for Richard Morrisson who was denied by a superb block from Cian Spicer.

A lofted pass from Jack Oldham looked promising for Tadgh Bradley, but the winger’s intended cross for Billy Barrett was sharply cut out by Ben Hogan.

Coachford’s Barrett had a half-chance after that, but he rifled wide from a narrow angle before he headed another chance wide from Danial O’Driscoll’s cross on the stroke of half-time.

What a chance fell for Rathcormac with only minutes into the second half, but with the goal in view, Morrisson dragged his effort wide with only Michael Brennan to beat.

Coachford’s woes were further compounded then, when Danial O’Driscoll was sent from the field of play after a straight red.

Despite Rathcormac’s numerical advantage, Coachford B continued to battle hard and Ben Hogan needed to be sharp off his line to prevent Matt Brady’s cross reaching Barrett before the Rathcormac keeper was forced into action again to tip over from Brady’s header following a long throw.

Then, Richard Morrisson timed his run nicely before latching on to Adam Hurley’s pass, but a bobble favoured Michael Brennan to win possession in the end.

Rathcormac were going through a good spell now and following excellent work by Ciaran Crowley, Wayne O’Leary played it on for Adam Hurley who saw his low fizzing effort flash past the upright.

What a chance then fell for Rathcormac after that – Richard Morrisson skipped past his marker before forcing Michael Brennan to parry from his strike and when it fell for Adam Hurley, he headed wide of a gaping target.

Rathcormac continued to dominate and when Ciaran Crowley found Wajtos in space, the midfielder could not adjust his feet properly enough to get a shot away, inside the box.

Then from Jamies O’Riordan’s throw, Danial Pooley prodded goalwards, only to see the impressive Michael Brennan tip over for a corner.

And from Richard Morrisson’s free kick Tom Murray pounced with a strike, but again, Michael Brennan was in the way to produce a wonderful save.

The hosts were using their extra man very well now and a turn and strike from Richard Morrisson went straight at Michael Brennan.

It was ten against ten though after that when Rathcormac’s Tadgh Lawton was shown a second yellow in the 81st minute.

With just minutes left, Morrisson could have made it three, but fired over with only Brennan to beat.
