The Sunday’s Well post office – which had been due to close today, Friday – has received a reprieve, with locals saying they have been told it is to remain open for “one or two weeks”, while An Post advertises the tender.
Earlier this week, An Post confirmed that the postmaster has resigned, and the tender was being advertised.
An Post said at the time that the post office would remain open until the end of the week, but could not say whether service will continue beyond the weekend.
A number of locals told today that they had been told the post office would remain open for “one or two weeks”, but unless a new postmaster could be found, it would likely close permanently after that.
A spokesperson for An Post declined to comment on whether the post office would remain open over the coming weeks, referring to a statement released earlier in the week.
That statement said: “An Post is working hard to maintain the local service and will provide an update to customers in the coming days.”
A sign remains displayed on the window stating that An Post is seeking a new retail partner to run the business.
With a deadline of 5pm on Friday, June 5, the advertisement says preference would be given to “suitable candidates who are proposing to co-locate the post office with a compatible business in a suitable premises”.
It is understood that An Post has spoken informally with a number of postmasters in the wider Cork region, with a view to running the Sunday’s Well post office.
Sunday’s Well has suffered a series of premises closures in recent years, with a shop, butcher, and two restaurants all closing.
The post office is currently the last operating retail outlet on Sunday’s Well Rd.
The closest post offices to Sunday’s Well are on Blarney St and Shandon St.
