COURCEY ROVERS eased their relegation worries a little with this win over Newtownshandrum in the RedFM Division 2 SHL, where the availability of Cork hurler Sean Twomey was a boost for the visitors.

The winners had their two goals in the opening minutes by Richard Sweetnam and Brendan Ryan after good play by Twomey and they led all through.

Roche followed the opening goal with a point while the home side got off the mark with a John Geary point.

Good play by Ryan led to a Sweetnam point to make it 2-2 to 0-1 before Jack Twomey pointed a free.

Points by Conor Twomey,  Cork panellist Cormac O'Brien and Geary trimmed the gap, 2-3 to 0-5 after the first quarter.

Courceys pushed on again, thanks to rapid points from Rory O'Callaghan (2), Sweetnam (2) and Stephen Nyhan, with a long-range free as they moved 2-8 to 0-6 clear.

In the 26th minute, Conor Twomey responded for Newtown but the Ballinspittle side finished the half with points by Sean Twomey and Colin Roche, to lead at the break 2-10 to 0-7.

Newtownshandrum thundered into the game on the resumption though as they gained control in the half-back line and their attack got a more regular supply, hitting 1-11 in this half.

Jack Twomey, John Geary, Sean Griffin and O'Brien made it 2-11 to 0-12 after 38 minutes.

Sweetnam clipped a free but Conor Twomey responded with a 65 before a well-placed puck-out by Stephen Nyhan found Colin Roche to make it 2-13 to 0-13 midway through the second half.

The teams exchanged scores before a late rally by the hosts saw Jamie Coughlan point before Sean Griffin followed with a 54th-minute goal, 2-16 to 1-17.

Coughlan split the posts again which left the minimum between the sides.

Sweetnam converted two free to steady the ship and Newtown tried in vain for a goal in the dying moments but the winners' defence held firm.
