Saipan still divides opinion in the 'Roy Keane vs Mick McCarthy' debate in Irish pubs over 20 years later.

That was why the film adaption starring Éanna Hardwicke and Steve Coogan was a big success.

McCarthy has said he left the cinema due to his frustration at how he was portrayed by Coogan.

Keane said he hasn't seen the film when it was brought by his former Manchester United teammate Wanye Rooney in the latest episode of The Overlap.

Laughing, Rooney said: "I was laughing my head off. The guy who was playing you was going at Mick, it’s about a 10-minute clip, it’s hilarious. Obviously, they’ve fabricated a lot of it but."

"Do you reckon?" Keane replied, not seeing the funny side.

"It’s based on a true story. Hold on a sec, no, it is a bit of a stretch."

When Rooney asked if there were really no footballs when the team arrived, Keane responded: "No footballs. No kit. No medical equipment. Hey, don’t worry about it"

He added: "Imagine this World Cup if that happened to a team, but for us it seemed to be okay."
