West Cork's islands to share over €1m in funds

Over €1.1m in funding is being made available towards supporting development works for the island communities of West Cork.

A total of €787,212 is being allocated to Cork County Council for capital works on Bere Island, Cléire, Dursey, Whiddy, Heir Island, Long Island and Sherkin.

Of the funding, €185,000 has been allocated for the Bere Island projects group (Bere Island, Dursey and Whiddy), which is up 4.23% on 2025, with €167,000 being allocated for the Sherkin Island Development Society (Sherkin, Heir and Long Island), up 4.38% on 2025.

Separately, €550,000 has also been ring-fenced this year for the local improvements scheme on offshore islands, which supports the upgrading of rural roads and laneways.

Heritage minister Christopher O’Sullivan said that the investment in the island communities of West Cork will deliver practical improvements and make a difference to daily life.

“Island communities face unique challenges. This funding will be used for projects such as road resurfacing, upgrades to piers and slipways, coastal protection works and improvements to helipads," the minister said.

“It represents a significant investment into the future of our offshore islands, one that will help deliver practical improvements that make a real difference to daily life.

“The additional funding will allow community organisations on our islands continue their vital work and, importantly, let them plan for their communities with greater certainty.” 

Mr O’Sullivan added: “Our islands are an important part of Ireland’s heritage, culture, and economy. I very much look forward to seeing these projects delivered in the months ahead.” 

The funding comes as part of a broader investment nationwide of €3.7m into offshore island communities.
