A 44-year-old man armed with a hammer allegedly smashed his way into a house in Farranree just before Christmas and recently there has been an objection to him being released on bail in the case, at Cork District Court.
Sergeant Gearóid Davis said at Cork District Court that gardaí were opposed to bail being granted in the case against Trevor O’Donoghue.
After hearing the application made by the man — without the benefit of a solicitor because of the free legal aid dispute — Judge Miriam Walsh remanded him in custody with consent to bail.
Mr O’Donoghue was remanded in custody until July 6.
Sgt Davis said it was alleged that the defendant was arrested at the scene.
“It is alleged [by the householder] that he could be heard banging on a garden wall at the back of the house,” Sgt Davis said.
“He then came through the living room window. Gardaí arrived, and he was standing at the back door. He had a hammer in his hand. Gardaí shouted at him to drop the hammer, which he did.
“The call came to gardaí to go to the house at Cushing Place, Farranree, at 3.40am.”
Bail conditions require Mr O’Donoghue to reside at an address at Kilbeg, Bandon, Co Cork. Also required is his own bail of €2,000, of which €1,500 is to be lodged in court, and an independent surety of €1,500 to be approved by the court.
