Cork County Council has celebrated the successful completion of phase 1 of the Town Walls of County Cork project.

The initiative, which is led by county archaeologist Annette Quinn, uses geographical information systems (GIS) technology to document, map, and promote the historic urban defences in the county.

The first phase of the project focused on the historic town walls of Youghal and Bandon, resulting in the creation of detailed GIS mapping and a digital record that includes information on surviving wall structures, towers, gates, and archaeological investigations.

This digital record also aims to serve as an important resource for heritage management, research, and public engagement.

To mark the completion of this milestone, county archaeologist Annette Quinn hosted a guided tour of the Youghal Town Wall.

Rich history

The event gave participants the opportunity to explore one of Ireland’s most significant surviving town walls and learn more about the rich history and development of Youghal.

Outgoing county mayor Mary Linehan Foley said the project is an example of how modern technology can help us understand, protect, and celebrate our rich heritage.

“This innovative project not only improves our understanding of these important monuments, but also makes that knowledge more accessible to local communities, researchers, and visitors. I congratulate everyone involved in delivering this important initiative.”

Chairperson of the historic monuments advisory committee, councillor Alan Coleman, added: “Our historic town walls tell the story of the development of Cork’s towns over many centuries. This project will help ensure they are better understood, protected, and enjoyed by future generations.”

Building on the success of phase 1, planning is now underway for phase 2 which will focus on the town walls of Kinsale and Buttevant.
