After a glittering career, West Cork woman Phil Healy has announced her retirement from international athletics at the age of 31.

A two-time Olympian, the ‘Ballineen bullet’ departs with her reputation cemented as one of the greatest sprinters Ireland has ever produced.

The Bandon AC athlete has represented Ireland impressively for the last 14 consecutive years.

Her career highlights include becoming a European championship silver medallist in the women’s 4x400m relay (Rome 2024), an Olympic finalist in the mixed 4x400m relay (Tokyo 2020), and an Olympic finalist in the women’s 4x400m relay (Paris 2024).

Healy consistently impressed on the world and European stages across the 100m, 200m, and 400m events, while also winning a total of 17 national senior titles.

Reflecting on her career, Healy said it has been the greatest honour and privilege to represent her country on the international stage.

“Athletics has given me memories that I will cherish forever, friendships that will last a lifetime, and opportunities I could only have dreamed of as a young girl joining Bandon AC.”

“I feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced so many special moments throughout my career.”

She added: “As I look ahead to the next chapter, I do so with great excitement and gratitude. Athletics will always hold a special place in my heart, having shaped my life and given me so many unforgettable experiences.”

Adrian O’Flynn, chairperson of Bandon Athletic Club, told The Echo that Healy has been a fine ambassador for Irish athletics.

“From her earliest days in the yellow singlet of Bandon AC, Phil has always represented our club with immense pride, determination, and humility.

“What began in the town park in Bandon grew into one of the most remarkable careers ever achieved by an Irish athlete.”

Healy played a central role in one of the great nights in Irish athletics history at the 2024 European Championships in Rome, when Ireland claimed silver in the women’s 4x400m relay in a then national record of 3:22.71.

Healy was part of a very talented and trailblazing team which also consisted of Rhasidat Adeleke, Sophie Becker, and Sharlene Mawdsley.

"Congratulations on the best career, I’m grateful I got to spend some of the journey with you,” said Mawdsley.

Many other iconic personalities in Irish athletics also have paid tribute to Healy including Thomas Barr, Sarah Lavin and Sophie Becker.
