Cork City Council has pledged to replace damaged traffic lights on one of the city’s busiest roads “as soon as possible”.

The overhead traffic lights at the N20/Assumption Rd junction on the north link road were struck by a vehicle on Tuesday night, knocking out the city-facing lights signalling the right-hand turn up to Assumption Rd in Blackpool.

A council spokesperson said that “for health and safety reasons, we had to inhibit the right turn movement onto Assumption Rd, as the traffic light optic for that movement was damaged and not visible”.

The right-turn filter light on the traffic island at the junction was also not functioning for much of Wednesday, but has subsequently been restored.

Asked when the overhead lights would be repaired, the spokesperson said: “Our crews have attended the site and are working to reinstate the right turn movement and restore the pedestrian crossing as soon as possible”.

In the interim, drivers and pedestrians are urged to use extreme caution when crossing the busy route.
