Mental health and families at heart of Cork mothers’ GAA festival

Up to 30 football teams from across the country have signed up to take part in this year’s Gaelic4Mothers&Others Festival at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday July 25th.

The annual event, run by the Ladies Gaelic Football Association, will see all monies raised donated to the Cork Mental Health Foundation.

Registration for this year’s festival is now open, with this year’s host clubs, the Bride Rovers, Dromtarriffe Dollies, and Carrigtwohill Cougars, encouraging other groups to get involved.

The initiative — aimed at promoting physical activity, social connection, and positive wellbeing — provides an innovative and supportive way for women to play football in a fun, inclusive, and non-competitive environment.

Mental health talks

This year’s programme, which will focus on mental health and family engagement, encourages women over the age of 25 to take part.

During the festival, the Healthy Ireland section of Cork County Council will deliver a series of positive mental health talks; Cork Sports Partnership will host family fun games and yoga classes; and Cork’s 96FM will provide entertainment with an MC and DJ.

The festival is fully supported by Cork GAA, which is providing access to SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh and its facilities.

Speaking ahead of the festival, event organiser Rosaleen O’ Brien said that Gaelic4Mothers&Others is about “much more than football”.

“It’s about confidence, connection and belonging,” said Ms O’Brien.

“Hosting this festival in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh sends a powerful message about the importance of women’s participation and mental wellbeing within our communities.”
