County Cork’s cultural ambassador and one of the Rebel County’s favourite authors is to perform a reading in West Cork for Ireland Reads Day. Cónal Creedon, who describes himself as “a proud grandson of Beara and Iveleary”, will read from his works at Bantry Library.
A novelist, playwright, and documentary filmmaker, Mr Creedon in 2024 became the first Irish artist to receive the prestigious Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts.
He was also invited to present the 70th anniversary Beatty Lecture 2024 at McGill University in Montreal. Last year saw him awarded an honorary UCC degree in literature.
Mr Creedon told The Echo he has fond memories of performing a reading in Bantry Library many years ago and persuading a visiting Seamus Heaney to read.
“We eventually crossed the street to Ma Murphy’s where a North/South sing-off ensued and the fun and frolics continued,” he said.
The reading takes place at 3pm this Saturday, February 28.
