St Patrick’s Cathedral in Skibbereen and the Church of the Ascension in Timoleague were recently awarded grants under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS).

Both churches will receive €37,500 for works to repair, restore and protect their historic structures.

“These two churches are iconic landmarks within their own areas. The love and attention they receive from their local communities is really uplifting, and it makes my job a lot easier,” said minister for nature, heritage and biodiversity, West Cork TD Christopher O’Sulllivan.

“I would encourage anyone to pay them a visit and experience the unique architecture of each of them.

“I have had the privilege of working with and watching the community groups in both Skibbereen and Timoleague as they work tirelessly to protect these buildings for the public good," he added.

The built heritage investment scheme is funded by the department of housing, local government and heritage’s national built heritage service and is administered by the local authorities.

The scheme is for the repair and conservation of structures that are protected under the planning and development acts.

A total of 696 projects throughout Ireland are to receive funding under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme, with €8.1m in funding being made available in 2026.

Mr O’Sullivan added: “As minister for heritage, I’m proud to be able to support the owners and custodians of these unique properties.

"I am committed to helping communities and individuals keep these buildings alive, prevent them from falling into ruin and ensure that they are in good health for future generations.”
