Gardaí at Cork's Anglesea Street station have issued an appeal for witnesses in relation to an alleged assault at Quaker St in the city last night. 

A spokesperson said gardaí and emergency services attended the scene following a report of the incident, which occurred at approximately 10pm.

"A male, aged in his 40s, was conveyed to Cork University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries," said the spokesperson. 

The scene is preserved for technical examination, and the road is currently closed with local diversions in place.

"Investigations are ongoing.

"No further information is available at this time," said the spokesperson. 

Gardaí have appealed to anyone with information in relation to this incident, or who may have video footage, to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station on 021 4522 000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station
