The alleged incident occurred  at Quaker St in Cork city at around 10pm on Monday night. 

Gardaí at Cork's Anglesea Street station have issued an appeal for witnesses in relation to an alleged assault at Quaker St in the city last night. 

A spokesperson said gardaí and emergency services attended the scene following a report of the incident, which occurred at approximately 10pm.

"A male, aged in his 40s, was conveyed to Cork University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries," said the spokesperson. 

The scene is preserved for technical examination, and the road is currently closed with local diversions in place.

"Investigations are ongoing.

"No further information is available at this time," said the spokesperson.
