It was a proud day for Douglas last week at the South West & Midwest Tidy Towns Awards in Tralee, Co Kerry.

Douglas Tidy Towns volunteers Rory Murphy and Colette Flynn represented the group as they collected the silver medal award — the first one ever awarded to Douglas.

Douglas has seen its overall score in the competition increase in recent years, and last year was no exception, jumping to 365 from 348.

Based on an appraisal of the town that was carried out last July, Douglas scored particularly well in the areas of tidiness and litter control; green spaces and landscaping; streetscape and public places; and community.

Speaking at the ceremony, minister of state Michael Moynihan praised all volunteers for “making a difference in their towns and villages”.

Biodiversity event

Meanwhile, the group’s annual biodiversity walk and litter picking event will be taking place at 10am this Saturday, March 21.

Meeting at the Bromley Park entrance to Doman’s Wood, the family-friendly event will benefit from the expertise of Cork City Council biodiversity officer Rosemarie McDonald, Cork community water officer Ellen Murphy, and Wild Work ecologist Karen Loxton.
