A Ballincollig woman has been overwhelmed by the generosity of the Cork public, following a fundraising campaign that was set up for her family who lost their home and all belongings in a recent house fire.

Abbey Moore lost her childhood home in Ballincollig back in August.

Eight people were living there at the time.

This included Abbey and her partner, her sister Katie and her partner and two children Aoíbhe, four, and Rían, one, and Abbey’s parents Cáit and Martin.

Friends of Ms Moore, Louise Aherne and Laura Hogan, set up a GoFundMe page as part of the fundraising effort to support the Moore family.

The fundraiser, which to date has raised over €27,800 in donations, aims to help to cover the family’s immediate needs and urgent costs as they come to terms with the devastating loss of their home and belongings.

Speaking to The Echo, Ms Moore said that she and her family have been overwhelmed by the response of the public in Cork in the form of donations and goodwill.

“We are still trying to wrap our heads around it,” said Ms Moore. “It has just been amazing.

“I think we have gone from traumatised to just heart-warmed with all of the kindness from everyone,”

she said.

“It actually just makes me emotional every time.”

Fianna Fáil Cork city councillor Colm Kelleher said he has been working with the Moore family in the aftermath of the fire.

“It is an absolutely diabolical situation that the family have found themselves in,” said Mr Kelleher.

“I have been working with the family since the morning after the fire.

“They are a very well-known and very well-respected family in the community.

“We constantly pick up newspapers and turn on TVs, and we are inundated with bad stories from around the world.

“This is obviously a horror story.

“But it will hopefully have a very happy ending,” Mr Kelleher added.
