Championship leader Not now Al of Clogheen showed great determination to win the Shanakiel harriers Senior draghunt on Sunday.

The heat of the day saw the host club reducing the draghunt and compliments to all concerned for making a wise decision with the welfare of all hounds their number one priority.

In a good finish the winner saw off clubmate and last year’s Puppy champion Slievemish Duchess trained by Damien Kidney.

Indeed, it was a great day for Clogheen as the winning connections Gary, Joe and Nicole Freyne also filled third ticket Not now May.

It has been a great season to date for the Freyne family and the winning connections were thrilled with their latest win.

“Last season Not now Al and indeed my entire kennel had a virus that set them back and we really had a poor year but thankfully things have turned for us in this campaign, said Gary Freyne.

In the Senior Maiden draghunt a close finish was witnessed when the Ger McCarthy Griffin United trained Knock’s Fox held off Damien Wade’s Clogheen hound Slievemish Lord his second runner up slot on the day.

In a true run draghunt the Trina and Ken Long trained Blue Rose of Southern/Carrigaline harriers filled third ticket.

It has been a quiet season for the McCarthy kennel, but trainer Ger is hoping this win changes their luck for the remainder of the campaign.

The Puppy meeting at the same venue was held at the same venue on Friday and on a beautiful evening draghunting fans were treated to two excellent races.

In the Puppy draghunt the host club provided good open terrain and what a night it proved for the O’Herlihy family of Fair Hill when their charge Starlight crossed the tape ahead of One day at a Time from Clogheen.

Mayfield brothers Kyle and Callum McCarthy will be pleased with the performance of Mossy’s Diamond with winning trainer Tristan O’Herlihy finding it hard to hide his delight.

“When your kids love the hounds there is extra delight when you win a draghunt and the season to date has been kind to us,” said Tristan.

In the Puppy maiden draghunt only three hounds lined up and what a night it proved for Emma Power’s Gypsy Rock when it crossed the tape ahead of Mannix from Christy and Marie Keating’s Kerry Pike kennel.

The consistent Mossy’s Reign of Mayfield filled the remaining ticket.

It has been announced that the International meeting will take place at Aghabullogue on Saturday June 6.

Next weekend there is no Senior draghunting action in Cork with the Cahirciveen meeting on Bank Holiday Sunday.

The John Hennessy memorial Puppy meeting will take place at Coppeen on Monday with a scheduled 11am slip.
