Resurfacing of the N22 Carrigrohane/Straight Road is likely to proceed in 2026, the council have confirmed, as a councillor says the current road is in a “terrible condition”.

Sinn Féin councillor for the area, Joe Lynch, had tabled a motion proposing that the council makes a request of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to provide funding to the Council to be able to undertake resurfacing works for the N22 from Leemount junction at Carrigrohane to Grassland Agro.

The council told him: “Late last year, the Infrastructure Development Directorate submitted a funding request to TII, accompanied by a Pavement Asset Repair and Renewal (PARR) report for the resurfacing of the N22, from Leemount Cross to Grassland Agro.

“The PARR report was accepted by TII and the pavement is now on the list for replacement. The work is likely to proceed in 2026 subject to funding consent from TII.” Mr Lynch told The Echo: “The road surface is in a terrible condition, and has been for a number of years now.

“I have been in regular contact with Transport Infrastructure Ireland and with Cork City Council management on the matter for over a year, urging them to fund resurfacing works on what is one of the main arterial routes into Cork City.

“I am pleased to report that - in response to a recent motion of mine on the matter - that the Council have now stated that works are likely to proceed next year.

“While there is no guarantee of funding coming from TII, this is a welcome step in the right direction and I will be keeping the pressure on both TII and the Council over the coming months to ensure that works are carried out here as quickly as possible.”
