Primary school teachers across Cork are being urged to register for this year's round of the Blue Star Programme.

Primary school teachers across Cork are being urged to register for this year’s round of the Blue Star Programme.

Now in its 15th year, the initiative introduces pupils to the workings of the European Union and promotes a greater understanding of European democracy, languages, and cultures.

Its curriculum includes cross-cultural activities, such as learning basic phrases in other European languages and celebrating European cultural days.

Participating classes will also earn about European history, geography, culture, and the EU institutions.

This year, pupils participating in the programme will also learn about Ireland’s presidency of the EU Council in 2026.

Teachers can integrate the programme into their lesson plans and tailor EU projects to their classes’ aptitude and ability.

As part of the programme, Fianna Fáil Cork South West TD, Christopher Ó Sullivan, and Fine Gael Cork South West senator, Noel Ó Donnabháin, visited Gaeilscoil Dr Uí Shulleabhháin in Skibbereen. Ireland South MEP, Billy Kelleher, also visited Drimoleague National School in West Cork.

Record

To date, more than 1,300 schools and an estimated 220,000 pupils have participated in the programme, with a record 350 schools participating last year.

Noelle O’Connell, CEO of European Movement Ireland, said that there has “never been a more exciting time for teachers and pupils to participate in the programme”.

“Since the inception of the programme, it has taught thousands of pupils about the importance of the EU, and civic participation, along with fun facts about other member states.

“I encourage teachers across Ireland to register and I’d like to thank all of the teachers for their commitment and dedication to the programme to date.”

Four elements

To successfully complete the Blue Star Programme, participating schools must complete all of its four core elements, and hold an event to mark Europe Day on May 9 next.

The programme is open to all primary school ages, with a separate version, Clár na Réalta Goirme i nGaeilge, available for Gaeilscoileanna.

Registration for the programme will be available until October 10, with European Movement Ireland encouraging schools to sign up as soon as possible.
