The road has since been re-opened.

Gardaí in Cork are appealing for witnesses following a fatal single-vehicle road traffic collision on the M8 motorway this morning. 

The collision occurred are around 6.50am on the southbound stretch of the motorway at junction 18, Upper Riverstown, Glanmire.

A man, aged in his 20s, who was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital following the incident was pronounced dead this afternoon.

The road, which was closed earlier to facilitate a technical examination by garda forensic collision investigators, has since re-opened.

A garda spokesperson said they are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

"Any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and were travelling in the area between 6.40am and 7.15am this morning is asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí," said the spokesperson.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Mayfield Garda Station on 021 455 8510 the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

"Investigations are ongoing," said the spokesperson.
