Labour to join with Greens in bid to tackle racism in Cork

Ms Harmon said the representatives from the Indian, Pakistani, Sikh community, Romanian, Mexican, African and Nepalese communities  attended the first meeting.

Members of Labour and the Green Party in Cork city are to engage with Gardaí on tackling racism following a meeting with community groups.

Senator Laura Harmon told The Echo: “I convened a meeting recently in Cork with community groups on actions to tackle racism in Cork along with Councillor Ciara O’Connor.

“The Labour Party will always stand with all communities at a time when we are witnessing worrying racist attacks in Ireland. We won’t stand for it and there can be no place for racism or hate in Cork. Cork will always be a city of welcomes and a safe harbour for all.”

Ms Harmon added: “Thank you to the representatives from the Indian, Pakistani, Sikh community, Romanian, Mexican, African, Nepalese communities who attended our first meeting and to councillor Honore Kamegni and Monica Oikeh from the Green Party for attending.

“The meeting agreed a number of key actions including engaging with the Gardaí and I hope to engage with many more communities in Cork on this issue.”

It comes as The Indian Embassy in Ireland has issued a warning to Indian citizens in Ireland following what they described as an increase in physical attacks reported against Indian citizens recently.

It advised Indian citizens to "avoid deserted areas, especially in odd hours".

The warning comes against the backdrop of reports of attacks targeting Indians in Ireland, including one in Tallaght on July 19.
