Cork senator calls for engagement over plans for accommodation centre

Senator Nicole Ryan said the people of Macroom should be included in the conversation.

A Cork senator has called for greater transparency and engagement with the people of Macroom in relation to an accommodation centre in the town.

Cork North West Sinn Féin senator Nicole Ryan said the people of Macroom should be included in the conversation in regard to the development.

Peppard Investments Limited received conditional planning permission on June 19 from Cork County Council to construct two buildings, to provide 20 apartment- style units for the temporary accommodation of people seeking international protection.

All associated car parking, landscaping, site clearance, and site development works are included in the development plan. Located in the Lower Codrum area of Macroom, the proposal states that access would be provided via the existing entrance to the Macroom Accommodation Centre, formerly known as the Riverside Park Hotel.

Ms Ryan said people in the town are frustrated at being left in the dark.

“Macroom is a community that cares; they have a proud track record of offering welcome and support to those in need,” she said.

“It’s not unreasonable for residents to ask for clarity about what’s being planned in their own town.

“Silence only fuels frustration, division, and uncertainty.”

Speaking to The Echo, Cork North West Fine Gael senator Eileen Lynch said:

“I want to confirm that there is no IPAS arrangement in place in relation to this development.

"Peppard have applied for planning, as they are entitled to as owners of this property. But they have not done so at the request of IPAS, nor is there an application to IPAS to put this development into accommodation for migrants seeking international protection.”

Ms Lynch added: “They may apply at a later date. But there is no guarantee that this development would be accepted by IPAS.

“Applications for planning permission are a matter for the relevant local authority and the property owner or provider.”
