A Cork woman who admitted stealing food from a local supermarket said that she did not pay for the items because they were overpriced, the district court has heard.

Court presenter Sergeant Linda O’Leary told Midleton District Court that Katie O’Driscoll, aged 27, of Prosperous Place, Thomas Davis Street, Blackpool, Cork had gone into SuperValu in Midleton with her mother on May 15, 2025.

The court heard that O’Driscoll took several items that were on the display including “meat and pudding” and placed them in a shopping bag.

She left the store, passing the checkouts without paying for the items, valued at €22.27. O’Driscoll was identified by CCTV footage and made full admissions to the theft when it was put to her. In a statement O’Driscoll said she had stolen the items because she thought they were overpriced.

The court was told that O’Driscoll had no previous convictions.

Defence solicitor Joseph Cuddigan said that his client was a single mother who had been fully co-operative and she had brought €25 to court in compensation.

Judge Colm Roberts convicted O’Driscoll of theft and fined her €100, allowing her two months to pay the fine.
