Cork court: Bench warrant issued for man arrested for threatening and abusive behaviour

Youghal District Court heard Gerard Connors had 19 previous convictions, and was not present in court.

A Wexford man arrested for threatening and abusive behaviour arising from an incident in Youghal was convicted in his absence during a recent sitting of Youghal District Court.

Inspector Michael Hogan said that gardaí received a call about a “domestic incident” at Clancy’s Bar in the town at about 6pm on June 10.

Giving evidence, Garda Alan Murphy said he responded to the call and went to Clancy’s Bar, where the suspect, identified as Gerard Connors, aged 40, of Irishtown Heights, New Ross, Co Wexford, had left the scene.

Garda Murphy located Connors nearby a short time later, where his behaviour was described as “extremely aggressive”.

The court was told Connors was in “an intense emotional state”, was shouting, “gesticulating wildly”, had his fists clenched, and told the garda to “f*** off”, adding he had no right to question him.

Garda Murphy said he asked Connors to desist, but he continued to behave in an aggressive manner.

Connors was subsequently arrested under the provisions of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994, and taken to Midleton Garda Station.

The court heard Connors had 19 previous convictions, and was not present in court.

Judge Brian O’Shea issued a bench warrant for Connors’s arrest, for him to be produced in court for sentencing.
