Cork City Council have confirmed they are working with Cork GAA on the return of the Rebels’ Fanzone at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh this month for the All-Ireland hurling championship final.
The announcement comes following Cork’s All-Ireland semi-final win against Dublin on Saturday.
The Lord Mayor of Cork, councillor Fergal Dennehy, congratulated the Cork senior hurling team on their victory.
“We are so proud of our Cork hurlers and the hard work they’ve put in to take us back to an All-Ireland final for what will no doubt be a thrilling match,” said Mr Dennehy.
“I know the people of Cork will back their team to the hilt, as they always do.
Cork City Council have said they, along with Cork GAA, are now working together to bring the free-of-charge Rebels' Fanzone event back to SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, to be held on Sunday, July 20.
Speaking to
, Sinn Féin councillor Michelle Gould said she hopes the Fanzone event can be “a celebration for the whole county”.“We had a great response to the idea last year, and again, now that Cork is in the final, the demand for tickets is going to be huge,” said Ms Gould.
“People want somewhere they can gather, cheer on the team, and soak up the atmosphere — especially for the thousands of people who can’t get a ticket to Croke Park.
Labour Party councillor John Maher said that he and his party colleagues will work with Cork City Council and Cork GAA to deliver the event.
“Up the rebels! we are delighted to see that cork are into the final of the all Ireland hurling championship,” said Mr Maher.
“Myself and my colleagues are going to work with city hall and with the GAA to ensure that we deliver a Fanzone event where families and supporters can come and enjoy and cheer on the rebel army as we go to the All-Ireland hurling final.”
His party colleague, councillor Peter Horgan said that the demand for tickets will be “astronomical”.
“I raised this matter back in April with officials, to examine the possibility of the Fanzone again, should Cork reach the All-Ireland,” said Mr Horgan.
“Already the demand for tickets is astronomical and the Fanzone is a perfect family friendly option to cheer Pat Ryan and the Rebels on in the All-Ireland final."
Further details on the Rebels’ Fanzone event, including a ticket release date, will be confirmed on Monday, July 14.
