A 36-year-old man who admitted having a €15,000 stash of heroin at Kent railway station was given a three-year suspended sentence.
David Kiernan of Lios Na Greine, South Douglas Road, appeared at Cork Circuit Criminal Court to confirm signed pleas of guilty to charges of having Diamorphine (heroin) and having these drugs for sale or supply to others at Kent railway station on May 18, 2023.
Detective Garda Dermot Crowley said that gardaí obtained information about the arrival of the accused on a train from Dublin on that date and that as soon as he was approached he was nervous and agitated. The backpack he was carrying was searched. Heroin and a caffeine mixing agent were found.
The accused admitted the offences and said he was to be paid by way of a small quantity of drugs for himself for bringing them to Cork.
The accused was described as a vulnerable person at the time of the crime but had since taken steps to get clear of addiction.
Judge Dermot Sheehan said that in light of the evidence in mitigation he could take the unusual step of giving David Kiernan a fully suspended sentence.
