Cork community groups get €616k in funding for upgrade works

A total of €615,818 in community recognition grants has been allocated towards groups in Cork.

The Community Recognition Fund (CRF) was introduced in 2023 to recognise the huge efforts made by communities in welcoming and supporting people coming to Ireland.

There are 11 community based projects in Cork that will receive funding under the CRF, with €17 million being set aside for 212 community projects nationwide.

The Carraig Centre in Ballincollig is to receive funding of €80,000. 

Another Cork project being funded includes a sum of €63,000 to Togher Community Association for the refurbishment of Lehenaghmore Park.

 Speaking to The Echo, Fergal Dennehy of Togher Community Association described how the funding will significantly benefit all in the local community.

“It is huge to us. Lehenaghmore Park is a community voluntary facility. We have two all weather pitches there. We have 1.5k walking circuit, we have a lawn bowls green.

“We will be able to upgrade the walkway, and we will be able to refurbish the lawn bowls green.

"We will be able to carry our various renovation works."

Meanwhile, Mayfield Sports Complex is to get funding of €54,140 for upgrade works to pool, gym and changing facilities.

Other Cork projects that will receive funding include Skibbereen Rowing Club of €52,734 towards upgrade and refurbishment works.

The Schoolyard Theatre & Arts Centre, Cloyne GAA, Mallow Search and Rescue, Midleton FC and Millstreet Community Council will all receive €50,000 each.

“I’m especially delighted to see Millstreet receive this support,” Cork North West Fianna Fáil TD Aindrias Moynihan said in reference to the funding being provided to Millstreet Community Council.

“It’s a vibrant town with a strong community spirit, and these upgrades will ensure the facilities match that energy.” 

Mr Moynihan added: “This funding is about investing in people, connection, and the future of our rural towns. I’m proud to see this government following through on that promise.” 

Cork North Central Fine Gael TD Colm Burke added that the funding highlights the commitment of the government to support local communities.

“I am delighted to see this funding for Cork as part of the Community Recognition Fund.

"This funding has enabled communities to be more inclusive by improving community facilities and community spaces.

“This funding will enable our communities to become more inclusive, resilient and sustainable places in which to live and raise a family, to visit and to socialise."

Fianna Fáil TD for Cork South West Christopher O’Sullivan added:

“This is another boost for our local heritage and community spaces. 

“Real change is happening, and community infrastructure is being improved and developed in West Cork and across the country. 

"We are delivering on our commitment to support local communities to be more inclusive and resilient.”
