The lighting of a northside public amenity has been described by a former lord mayor as a very beneficial development for the area.

Tony Fitzgerald, Fianna Fáil city councillor for the North West ward, said the lighting would facilitate walking in the amenity.

“Work has commenced on the public lighting of the Fair Field, which is a very popular public amenity on the northside of the city, and this work is part of 12 projects funded under the rapid deployment pedestrian scheme, to the sum of approximately €2.5m,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

“The Fair Field lighting project is coming in at approximately €75,000 to €100,000.”

He added that groundworks were already under way, and good progress was being made.

“This work will promote health and wellbeing in terms of walking, and public health, working from dusk to midnight with a photocell allowing greater energy efficiency,” he said.

“It’s great to get this project under way, and it will also include the removal of the bollards on John F Connolly Rd and Churchfield Rd, allowing for greater pedestrian access.

"These programmes will roll out throughout the year, and I look forward to their completion so the public can enjoy this wonderful amenity in the heart of the northside.”

The Fair Field is a place of considerable historical significance in Cork, and it was to there in the early part of the 17th century that drovers brought their cattle for sale after Cork Corporation banned slaughterhouses within the city’s walls.
