Sergeant John Dineen said the Director of Public Prosecutions directed that the case be dealt with by indictment at Cork Circuit Criminal Court and that a signed plea of guilty could be entered in advance.

A 51-year-old man was arrested and charged on Thursday with 13 counts of sexually assaulting a girl between 1989 and 1997.

Garda Mary-Jane Somers arrested the defendant and brought him before Cork District Court.

There was no Garda objection to bail, on conditions which were agreed with the defendant, who was represented by solicitor Frank Buttimer.

He is to have no contact with the complainant or her family, directly or indirectly; sign on once a week at his local Garda station; notify gardaí within seven days if travelling abroad; provide gardaí with a mobile number at which he is contactable at all times; notify gardaí of any change of address; and to be of good behaviour.

Sergeant John Dineen said the Director of Public Prosecutions directed that the case be dealt with by indictment at Cork Circuit Criminal Court and that a signed plea of guilty could be entered in advance.

Mr Buttimer said that would not arise in this case, and that a book of evidence would be necessary.

Judge Mary Dorgan adjourned the case until May 22 for preparation and service of the book of evidence.

Nothing can be published that might identify parties to this case.
