A man in his 20s was arrested in Cork in the early hours of Monday morning after it was found he was driving under the influence of drugs, without a valid license, NCT, tax or insurance, gardaí have said.

Gardaí were on patrol on the Blarney Road on Sunday night when they were alerted to a driver who was travelling without tax, insurance or NCT.

According to a post on the garda Facebook page, when the man became aware of the garda patrol car, he tried to speed away.

Gardaí said that after being stopped, the driver tested positive for cocaine, opiates and amphetamines.

It was also found that the driver had been disqualified from driving for four years and was caught two weeks prior with no license or insurance in a different car.

As a result, the driver was arrested at 12.30am and has since been charged.

The man is due to appear before the Cork District Court at a later date.
