Gardaí in Cork are investigating the theft of a lurcher from an animal shelter last month after they rescued the dog chained up on wasteland in the city this week.

The poor lurcher was discovered by gardaí carrying out a search near a residential area in Cork city.

The dog had been chained up on a stretch of waste ground, had been abandoned without food or water, and was in a state of great distress.

After a making a few enquiries, gardaí discovered that the lurcher had been stolen from an animal shelter in Cork county in mid-January.

A garda spokesperson said: “The dog has since been moved to safety and is currently getting all the food, water and belly rubs necessary”.

They added that gardaí in Cork continue to investigate the circumstances of the theft from the animal shelter.
